Mick Fabar – A Pioneer In Building Energy Efficient Homes

When Mick Fabar set up his construction company Mick Fabar Constructions in 2001 in his hometown Orange, NSW, little did he or the world know that within a short period of 7 to 8 years, he would be an internationally acclaimed figure in the construction industry. That is a saga that needs to be told in some detail.

When Mick started off on his entrepreneurial journey, he focussed on setting superior benchmarks from the word go. He stressed on construction techniques that soon earned him an excellence award from the Master Builders Association in 2005 for a redevelopment project.

Just when things were looking upbeat for Mick, his company took an adverse hit simply because Mick refused to compromise with his principles. In 2005 a mining boom in Orange saw builders from all over Australia flocking to this town to bag lucrative building projects. While doing so, they offered rock bottom rates that meant adjusting quality for quantity. Mick wouldn’t adopt this line and instead decided to branch out into a hitherto untapped field in the Australian construction scenario.

In 2006, he founded Green Homes Australia, a firm that had building green, sustainable and energy efficient homes as its primary objective. For doing so, Mick incorporated a few exclusive strategies in his building plans. These included installation of solar energy plants, rain water harvesting, recycling solutions and use of energy saving devices. All this combined resulted in homes that consumed less electricity even in extreme weather, thereby lowering electricity bills and benefitting hundreds of Australian households.

However, it reflects on the magnanimity of Mick that he wanted to share his knowledge in building green homes with other builders so that Australians in general would benefit from his expertise. In 2008, he built two energy efficient buildings in Orange and invited builders from all over the country to study his techniques and incorporate them in their building plans. Over 20 builders till date have taken up his offer on a franchise model.

Needless to say, Mick’s companies have been the recipient of top honours at the Housing Industry Awards over the years. His companies have also received prestigious ISO certifications for Quality and Energy Management Systems.

Further, all buildings, domestic or commercial built by Mick are deemed nationally and internationally to be energy efficient ones.

Step towards an ecofriendly world!

Mick Fabar became a construction revolution in Australia. Not only this, he was the person who introduced the concept of green and energy efficient homes and brought that change. This efforts are go influential that it created a mark in the industry and business had started to expand exponentially. The planning process is a good time to look into a renewable energy system that can provide electricity, water heating, or space heating and cooling. Taking all of this together, he brought the change not only in his home but all the homes wherever he can in whole of Australia. He is the ideal person to have guidance from on how to improve the energy efficiency of the home to achieve a higher score of substantial living and save money. Fabar incorporated certain features in the building plans like heating and cooling systems, installation of solar energy plants and recycling solutions.
Mick Fabar constructions offers these services to its clients. These services include Complete Project Management, Construction, Maintenance Coordination and Coordination of all requisite approvals and associated support services. The team spends a significant amount of time with clients before, during and after construction to ensure that the demands of their clients are fulfilled and expected outcomes are achieved. Under Mick’s direction, Green Homes Australia quickly became Australia’s fastest growing residential construction company. As, he was the first builder in his region to qualify as a Green Smart accredited builder. He is not only a Successful Entrepreneur but also a Managing Director at Green Homes Australia. Mick achieved his goals by incorporating specific techniques in his building plans. These techniques were modified whenever needed to keep with the rising competition.

Mick is not only just belong to his business. He received a formal invitation to compete for a Guinness World Record for speed boxing in 2005. To fill the gaps, he learnt how to improve his fitness levels. With relentless focus, Mick applied these skills in the record breaking Guinness competition and broke the previous record by 4 punches. This shows, that he gave it everything he had which includes all the hours of relentless preparation culminating into a single minute. The level of focus he had is tough to match. Witnessing such a high level of improvement in himself, his passion for speed boxing allowed him to set a total of 6 Guinness World Records.

The Two Sides Of Legendary Mick Fabar

If a legend has to be seen in the proper perspective, both personal and entrepreneurial aspects should be analysed in some detail. One of the stalwarts of the Australian business community has been Mick Fabar but his exploits does not stop there, he has carved out a niche for himself in his private capacity too.

It is not everybody that can make an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records even once in a lifetime. To Mick’s credit, he has done so repeatedly. In November 2005 he surpassed the then standing record with 436 punches in a minute. When Englishman Paddy Doyle broke this record, Mick bounded back with 548 punches at an event held at Sydney Football Stadium. Another amazing feat that earned him an entry in the Book was 302 left punches in under a minute followed by 447 hits on a speed ball in the same time. Incredible feats but then, that is Mick for you.

On the business front, Mick is an example of how to go off the beaten track and still make it big. In 2001, he started his own construction company Mick Fabar Constructions and soon achieved high benchmarks of excellence, similar to what he followed in his personal life,. Within a short period of 4 years he had been conferred with an Excellence award by the Master Builders Association for a redevelopment project.

Just when things were running on full steam for Mick, there was a downturn in his business but not because of his own making. A mining boom in Orange saw builders flocking to this small town to bid for construction projects. Most offered unscrupulous cut throat rates. They succeeded in bagging projects without giving a thought to the quality of construction. Mick refused to toe this unethical line and soon branched out into a totally new field of construction by floating a sister concern Green Homes Australia in 2006.

The USP of this company was that it focussed exclusively on energy efficient homes. These could function on lower electricity consumption resulting in reduced energy bills. The features that were incorporated in the building plans included extensive use of solar power, rain water harvesting, passive heating and cooling solutions and optimised recycling applications. To share his expertise with fellow builders, he built two prototype buildings in Orange in 2008 and invited them to pick up knowledge in this field through a franchise model. Over 20 builders participated and soon millions of new homes were being built in Australia based on Mick’s foresight.

Mick’s vision in creating energy efficient homes has been acknowledged with prestigious ISO accreditations – ISO 9001 for Quality Management Systems, ISO 14001 for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems and ISO 50001 for Energy Management Systems. Added to this, any building constructed by Mick Fabar Constructions, whether it is commercial or residential is internationally acknowledged to be an energy efficient building.

No doubt a great tribute to the legend of the construction industry!

This is the post excerpt.

Any discussion on innovations in the Australian construction industry invariably starts off with Mick Fabar . And rightly so! He has been at the forefront of a green revolution in the industry and today builders are using know how, knowledge and expertise pioneered by him in this field.

In 2001, Mick started his company Mick Faber Constructions in his hometown Orange, NSW. Business flourished and in 2005, he was awarded an excellence award for a redevelopment project by the Master Builders Association. However, by a quirk of fate he faced a downturn in business. The mining boom in Orange attracted hordes of builders from all over the country, all eager to cash in on the opportunity to make quick profits by offering rock bottom rates. Mick’s business took a hit but not for long.

He founded Green Homes Australia in 2006 based on a unique and innovative concept. The focus was on building high energy efficient homes that drastically reduced electricity consumption and bills. Business soon reached peak performance levels as before and within just a couple of years of its inception, a slew of awards followed. Mick won the HIA National awards for Water Efficiency 2008 and energy Efficiency 2009. In 2009, he was also a finalist in the Housing Industry Association awards in two categories: Green Smart Builder of the Year and National Home of the Year.

Green Homes Australia built two energy efficient homes as models to showcase this green concept. Builders were invited to study the features, specifications and benefit from the company’s knowledge in this field. More than 20 builders adopted the franchise offered by Green Homes Australia and incorporated the technical aspects in their construction plans. As a result, millions of home owners are able to get access to energy efficient homes.

Till about a year back, Green Homes Australia was the only Australian construction company to have been given the Energy Management System Certification ISO 50001.
