Mick Fabar is today a name to reckon with in the Australian construction industry. His revolutionary techniques in green building technology that provides energy efficient homes to millions of Australians strangely started when unforseen events overtook him. This is his story.
In 2001, Mick started his company Mick Fabar Constructions in his hometown Orange, NSW and soon established high benchmarks that other builders found hard to follow. Out of the many awards he won then was one of excellence awarded by the Master Builders Association in 2005 for a redevelopment project.
However, in the same year, he faced events that he could not control. A mining boom in Orange saw a large number of builders flocking to this town to cash in on new found opportunities. They offered rock bottom and cut throat rates to corner business. Mick Fabar refused to compromise on quality by following this path and as a fall out, his business went off the rails.
But Mick bounced back with a novel building concept. He established Green Homes Australia with focus on providing energy efficient homes. His building plans incorporated such path breaking concepts as water saving solutions together with rain water harvesting, optimised use of solar energy, natural ventilation and passive cooling and heating.
To spread the message so that more people could benefit from his knowledge and expertise in this field, he built two model energy efficient homes and invited other builders to participate in a franchise model. Almost 20 of them signed up and the homes they built had Mick’s innovative techniques incorporated in them.
As an acknowledgement of his expertise, he has won numerous awards from the building industry as well as ISO certification for energy conservation.
Today all buildings built by his companies are considered internationally to be energy efficient ones.
Mick Fabar was the first builder in the region to qualify as a Green Smart accredited builder. In 2001, he founded Mick Fabar Construction in Orange. Within five years, he received an excellence award for a redevelopment project from the Master Builders Association.
